HOW I LAUNCHED A NEW ONLINE STORE DURING LOCKDOWN
    starter story

Tell us about what you’ve been up to! Has the business been growing?

Obviously, 2020 was a tough year for retail. Even though Temples and Markets is an online store, my products in store would generally be classed as “want to have” and not “need to have.” Consequently for the middle part of the year, specifically because Australia locked down for a few months, trade was very slow. I used this time to create a new online store for women’s fashion.

I had brought in the fashion designs for the bricks and mortar pop-ups I’d done in the previous 2 years. It was time to upload these pieces to an online store, primarily because I wasn’t sure when I’d be doing another pop-up.

THE HOLIDAY THAT CHANGED MY LIFE

JUDITH TREANOR SUN HERALD SUNDAY LIFE MAGAZINE HOLIDAYS THAT CHANGED LIVES

Travelling through Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam and Laos awoke something within me – I fell in love with the colour, the serenity and the people, and knew I'd come back to see more. And while I had settling in Australia in the back of my mind, I don't think I could ever have imagined the role south-east Asia would play in my future.
Why You Need To Stop Using Plastic Bags And Use Crochet Bags Instead

    THE MULTI TASKING WOMAN

In 2018, the rising concern about how we are impacting the ecosystem and environment brought about the introduction of legislation preventing the supply of single-use plastic shopping bags in Australia. Sadly, the alternative offered by supermarkets is a heavier duty re-usable plastic bag that still doesn’t solve the plastics issue. So, what should we use instead?

Merrymetric Crochet Bags. They’re a terrific alternative, with plenty of benefits that will make ditching plastic bags an easy choice.

IS AUSTRALIA BECOMING THE LAND OF THE CHEAP?
When people think of Asia, they think cheap tacky souvenirs, but I want to change that perception; there are unique products out there.  So many talented people using recycled materials, with amazing ideas, using traditional methods. I would hope that this is something people will come to appreciate.

Women represent about 13% of quoted media sources when it comes to business. So, the stories of Australian female leaders go largely untold. Femeconomy’s female leader interviews with our community are a way to remedy this imbalance for the women achieving outstanding results in business.

Stories of female leaders, who typically pursue non-traditional, non-linear career paths are fascinating. We want to know in their words how they’ve reached the pinnacles of leadership. These trailblazing female leaders’ stories, wisdom and friendship have left an indelible imprint on us, as they will on you. Enjoy!

HOW JUDITH TREANOR STARTED A BUSINESS SOURCING PRODUCTS FROM S.E ASIA

What's your backstory and how did you come up with the id ea?

My love of S.E Asia is represented through Temples and Markets.

I have been fortunate to have traveled extensively and often to Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Singapore over the last 20 years. During those travels, I’ve been awestruck by the creativity of the people I met, their stories of resilience against hardship, and their creations that are borne out of hardship.

So often they have come from marginalised or poverty-stricken areas and use traditional crafts and sustainable materials to handmade unique and gorgeous items that one could never see elsewhere.

Australian local homewares stores offer beautiful and bespoke experiences for consumers, ones that often reach far beyond the products they sell. And with Australians shopping less frequently within their communities than ever, it's time to shift our focus back local.

The amount of money that small businesses reinvest back into their local communities is on the rise totalling $50 billion this year, according to research commissioned by Amex, up from $38 billion in 2017.

SHOPPING CONSCIOUSLY, THE RISE OF THE 'MINDLESS SHOPPER

Shopping Consciously. The Rise & Rise Of The ‘Mindless Shopper’.

Increasingly Aussie consumers are falling into the trap of ‘mindless shopping’ – that unquenchable thirst for more and more stuff to improve our lifestyles but which only leaves us wanting more.

Sydney entrepreneur Judith Treanor who is the owner of an online store with a difference is calling on us to become conscious and mindful shopper to avoid the pitfalls of spending too much on stuff we don’t need.

“We’ve all been guilty of buying something on impulse, often because someone else already has it, or their advertising convinces us we need it, but then it ends up sitting in the cupboard for months before we end up getting rid of it,” said Ms Treanor.

Ethical shopping expert Judith Treanor wants us to think more carefully before making the purchase and ask yourself if the purchase will make a difference to the recipient or are you just buying for the sake of it?

“We live in such a wasteful society that this year I really want to make sure my shopping doesn’t add to this waste,” said Mrs Treanor.

“There are amazing products made from re-cycled items with powerful stories behind them especially from social enterprises in South East Asia,” she said.

    FEMALE LEADER - JUDITH TREANOR

Judith Treanor, Founder of Temples and Markets, reminds us of an intrepid modern day East India Company adventurer. With an irrepressible passion for South-East Asian design, Judith has created Temples and Markets to showcase the region’s emerging designers and artisans on a global stage. 95% of products are handmade. All are ethically produced and each comes with its own story. We caught up with Judith to discover what drives her entrepreneurial mission. We were transported by her stories.

JUDITH, WHY DO YOU LOVE SOUTH-EAST ASIAN DESIGN ABOVE ALL ELSE?

I have travelled extensively throughout the South-East Asian region over the last 20 years. When I first visited South-East Asia, I was as an ‘older than most’ backpacker. It was at that time the people, the beauty of the beaches, food, history and the contrasts and contradictions that characterise the region, first found their way into my heart.

WHERE SHOULD WE TRAVEL IN SOUTH-EAST ASIA AND WHAT SHOULD WE DO THERE?

Everyone should visit the magical small city of Hoi An in Vietnam, a UNESCO cultural heritage site. A perfect holiday town with something for everyone, including a beach just outside of the main town. It is characterised by well preserved timber shophouses, ancient bridges and colourful lanterns which light up the streets at night.  Hoi An is closed to traffic in the evening, so you can wander through the gorgeous laneways choosing which fabulous restaurant to eat at, or visit the myriad art galleries and design stores.

During the day, I recommend people watching whilst sipping Vietnamese Iced Coffee at a riverside cafe. Discover the beautiful temples and browse the local markets! Have shoes or boots made by Friendly Shop Shoes, and taste Hoi An speciality dishes, white rose dumplings and the Cau Lau Noodle Dish.

With a history as a trading port and commercial centre attracting artisans and traders from Vietnam and overseas for centuries, Hoi An is brimming with creativity. Enrol in Red Bridge Cooking School where you’ll visit a local market and organic farm to pick up herbs for your recipes, and learn to cook the best Pho I’ve tasted. Enjoy a dip in the riverside pool between dishes. Truly an experience to treasure forever.

    How Ethical Shopping Changes Lives

Temples and Markets was born out of a love of travel, eating and shopping my way through South East Asia. Along the way I discovered products created by resilient individuals, employed by Social Enterprises and Artisan Groups. These groups exist to improve people’s lives and empower them towards a better future. By showcasing their handmade and unique products, my store has become part of the growing movement of ethical retailers.

ETHICAL SHOPPING IS A WIN-WIN FOR THE CONSCIOUS CONSUMER.

As a global community we can no longer pretend not to know where our products come from, how they are made and who by. Shopping consciously literally makes a difference to individual lives and communities. One may think one person can not make an impact. But, if we all join together and shop with a conscience can you only imagine what good can come of that globally.

    TRAVELSHOPA
    RETAILER GUIDES - JUDITH TREANOR

There’s something about buying a special item from your travels – whether it is the memories attached or the sheer craftsmanship behind the item, these pieces become treasurable gems that last a lifetime.

Awestruck by the creativity of the people she met in South East Asia, Judith Treanor’s love for the region is represented through her online-curated store, Temples and Markets . The store showcases artisan-made fashion accessories, jewellery and home décor, unique to the region. Each product is ethically and personally sourced from Judith’s travels and come with stories of its creators, giving a human element to the often cold world of eCommerce.

We can’t help but wonder what sparked her interest in creating Temples and Markets. We asked Judith to share how she has gone about building Temples and Markets, snippets of her favourite countries and what’s at the top of her travel bucket list.

How do you curate the brands?

Firstly I have to love what I sell. I was an interior decorator prior to Temples and Markets and I gravitate to bold colours and distinctive designs so that plays a big part in product choice.

Secondly, the brands and or their products have to have a story and be following ethical practices. Their pieces should be unique and handmade and preference is given to items made from sustainable or recycled materials.

I curate brands that I have come across when literally pounding the streets/markets or who I have found from online research. Similar to Travelshopa I now have brands who approach me through word of mouth but they have to fit the brief if they are to be included.

WHY GOING ETHICAL CAN BOOST YOUR BOTTOM LINE

With (eco) conscious shopping on the rise, more and more consumers want to know the story behind the product they are buying, including the latest gifts for Christmas.

Consumer expert Natalie O’Rourke says that an increasing number of people want to be ethical consumers. “There’s been a real shift in recent years towards ethical shopping,” she says.

“Everyone wants to feel like they are doing their bit by helping those less fortunate. Temples and Markets [for example] is a great outlet for ethical consumers.”

Judith Treanor is the owner of online store Temples and Markets, which she launched last year after being inspired by the stories of the women she met while traveling around South East Asia.

Her aim is to tempt shoppers away from cheap, disposable items which end up in the landfill and encourage people to buy wonderful, handmade products with a different story behind every item.

“It’s not just the uniqueness of the exquisite jewellery, handcrafted leather bags or home furnishings but it’s the story behind these amazing products that is truly inspiring,” she explains.

WHAT ETHICAL SHOPPING MEANS TO ME

It’s hard to believe that not too long ago I was a serial offender of careless consumerism. As a lover of fashion I would get a frequent kick out of loading up shopping bags with cheap and cheerful new dresses, shoes and bags from the High Street. Hate to admit it but I would also haggle over the cheapest price of designer copy handbags or jeans on my trips to South East Asia.

How times have changed and how I have changed. From my own life experiences; from a brush with cancer to frequent travel, I am intent on living life with purpose and to make a positive difference in the world during my short time on this planet. Like so many of us who are part of the growing movement away from Fast Fashion and towards Ethical Shopping I am now sickened by an industry that thrives off human slavery, child labour and abuse.

By moving away from meaningless shopping and embracing conscious consumerism I can literally make a tangible difference to the life of the person who make the products I buy. This is what ethical shopping means to me.

    INNER WEST MUMS
GETTING TO KNOW...JUDITH TREANOR OF TEMPLES AND MARKETS. A BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT

What motivated or inspired you to start Temples & Markets?

Travelling back and forth from South East Asia, I have seen some amazing places and have met some amazing people. I would come back from a trip wearing a piece of unique jewellery or carrying a handbag and people would literally stop me in the street and ask where I got it. When I’d say “Thailand” I would see their faces drop. I started to formulate in my mind a business concept that would expose the people I have met in South East Asia making incredible things to a wider market outside the region, and connect people back home with the emerging designers and artisans they wouldn’t normally know about.

The other thing was to bring back the memories of a great trip away. So often people have buyers regret after returning from travelling, they either think they’ve spent too much or don’t have the luggage space, yet when they get home they reminisce about the things they could/should have bought. That was so often my case so I decided to bring back those things we could have bought to people via an online store.

Additionally the website is designed to give people a feel of S.E Asia; there is a travel blog within it talking about food, hotels, stories of creative people and so on. There’s a growing movement towards ethically sourced and unique products and that was part of the motivation behind the concept too.

Teachers Gifts. The first year of school I didn’t even know I should buy one. I was too busy thinking about how hard I worked getting my school hating angry pants preppie to school every day. I completely forgot to recognize the teachers in his life who had to deal with it!

That being said I’m sure teachers don’t turn up to work every day expecting to be showered with gifts at the end of the year. This post isn’t sponsored whatsoever. It is made up of some awesome women who care, women who have put so much passion into their business – I want to recognize them.

These products speak for themselves, the presentation is beautiful. The products are made with your quality of life at heart. Gifts are not all about monetary value. You want something that says “Thank You” in a very personal way, this is your child they have looked after all year long.

EASY WAYS FOR A GREEN LIFESTYLE

Going green doesn’t have to be a complicated project, or be of great expense to you and your family. In fact, there are very simple changes you can make to your lifestyle that will help save the world around you, with no inconveniences whatsoever. Take a look at some of the ideas below to get you started on your clean, green adventure!

For example, Judith Treanor profiled the Hmong people in Vietnam who even make cushion covers and runners out of hemp, including one who “wanted to apply her creative design skills and her interest in community stewardship to develop a line of products that do not leave a mess in their trail and provide overall socioeconomic and environmental benefits to local producer villages.”

This emphasises the importance of knowing where the items you are purchasing come from, and how they are affecting the environment, no matter which corner of the world you live in.
