In Cambodia beauty comes from the horrors of war

In Cambodia, where the memory of war still lingers, one talented and creative jeweller is turning a symbol of destruction into something beautiful. Thoeun Chantha, the creator of Angkor Bullet Jewellery, is using discarded bullet casings to create unique and intricate pieces of jewellery.

Growing up during the Khmer Rouge regime, Chantha witnessed the devastating effects of war first-hand. After years of struggle, he found his calling as a goldsmith, using his craft to bring beauty and meaning to the world around him.

Inspired by the rich cultural heritage of his country, Chantha began using bullet casings as a symbol of transformation and renewal. With his skilled hands and eye for detail, he transforms each casing into a work of art, incorporating traditional Cambodian motifs and symbols.

The process of transformation begins with the bullet casings being melted down into recycled brass, which is then plyable, and ready to fit the moulds that Chantha has created for each symbol.

The resulting collection of jewellery is stunning, each piece a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the power of transformation. From delicate earrings to statement pendant necklaces, each piece captures the essence of Cambodia's rich cultural heritage.

But Chantha's work is not just about creating beautiful pieces of jewellery. He is also passionate about giving back to his community and pays it forward by training young apprentices, from marginalised communities, in the art of jewellery making.
