Explore Krabi With Kids: Top 10 Things To Do

Visiting Krabi with kids is a fantastic way to immerse yourself in Thailand’s cultural offerings. With everything from animal experiences to nature walks and swims, Krabi is one of South East Asia’s gems and well worth exploring with kids. 

Ao Nang dining and shopping

Ao Nang is the central tourist destination of Krabi, with most of its accommodation being positioned near the beautiful Ao Nang beach. There is plenty of food and shopping on offer with countless souvenir shops, clothing stores and lots of restaurants with both local and international cuisines available. Swimming at Ao Nang Beach is a must and everything in Krabi is easily accessible from Ao Nang. 

Krabi Emerald Pool and Blue Lagoon

Emerald Pool is also known as ‘crystal pool’ and is an astonishing blue coloured pool full of natural spring water. The pool can be reached via forest trails in the Khao Nor Chu Chi forest. Swimming is a must when you visit the Emerald Pool, and nearby you’ll find Khao Phra Bang Khram Nature Reserve’s famous hot pools. While you’re in the area, you will also want to take a look at the Blue Lagoon which is 600m up the track – but beware, the Blue Lagoon is not for swimming. The water temperature is much hotter, and it is surrounded by quicksand!

Hot Springs waterfall

These thermal springs are naturally heated by volcanic chambers below the surface. The average water temperature is between 35-40 degrees Celsius and soaking in them is a totally therapeutic experience for all. Surrounded by lush rainforest, climb in the hot springs and relax, or sit on the ledge of the cascading waterfalls and let the water rush all over your body. Beneath the hot springs is a cool stream, perfect for a dip after sitting in the hot pools. 

Krabi town night market

Held every Friday, Saturday and Sunday night, the Krabi night market is a great way to buy some local wares from artisans and artists – and of course, try some local snacks and street food. Mentionable purchases that can be made at the night markets include leather handbags and oyster pearl jewellery. This event is really popular and attracts lots of tourists so hang onto the kids in the crowds. 

Island-hopping

Take a day tour of the surrounding islands near Krabi. There are nine islands, each with its own beautiful attractions. There are multiple island-hopping tours available in Krabi such as the popular four island tour, including Koh Gai, Koh Poda, Koh Mor and Koh Tub. Or go for a day tour to Koh Hong – a short 20-minute speedboat ride from Ao Nang to a secluded tropical oasis. Of course, there are the more famous Phi Phi islands nearby or if you love James Bond, there is a James Bond Island tour where The Man with the Golden Gun was filmed. 

Traditional junk boat ride<

A junk boat is a traditional Chinese sailing ship, developed during the Han Dynasty in 2067BC. A ride on a traditional junk boat is like no other boat ride you’ll ever take. Take a sunset cruise on a junk boat for a memorable scenic cruise.

Krabi Elephant Sanctuary

Krabi Elephant House is the only ethical elephant sanctuary in Krabi. There is no riding and no chains. Activities instead involve walking with the elephants to a pond for a drink of water and a play, then help to feed the elephants. The sanctuary houses elephants rescued from less humane activities popular in Thailand, and they can grow old in peace here. The final activity is to get muddy with the elephants, then get in your swimmers and jump in the water for a wash with them. You can book a tour with a group to take you to the sanctuary and back to your accommodation. 

Khao Sok National Park

If you can spend some time in Khao Sok National Park, there are tonnes of activities you can do. Everything from rainforest nature safaris to jungle lake safaris, or just enjoy some kayaking with the kids and some trail walks. Animal spotting is another reason to spend some time in the National Park – keep an eye out for wild elephants and gibbons. 

Railay and Phra Nang Beach Grotto

This stunning peninsula is accessible only by boat – so take a trip out to Railay and enjoy relaxing on the beach in this tropical paradise. The sand is white, the views are extraordinary, the limestone cliffs and caves make exploring a must. You can even have dinner in a grotto tucked away beneath the limestone cliffs. 

Ao Nam Mao Outdoor Aquarium

Ao Nam Mao is Thailand’s Costal Resource Management unit – and not a well-known tourist attraction. The centre breeds endangered species in saltwater lakes, where they are eventually released back into the sea. Enjoy the views of the fish and marine life from observation decks. Depending on what they are breeding at the time, different species of fish, sharks, turtles and other marine life can be seen up close at Ao Nam Mao.
