Why Hua Hin Thailand is the perfect holiday destination right now

Now we're past the worst of the Covid years, this is the perfect time to get back to Thai islands and beach towns like Hua Hin. Outside of school holiday periods, hotels are at low to medium capacity which means you'll receive warm Thai welcomes, and personal and generous service. For a relaxing holiday within easy reach of Bangkok, Hua Hin is a great choice. Just 4 hours drive from Bangkok (possibily less depending on traffic and time) Hua Hin is known for its stunning beaches, rich cultural heritage, and vibrant nightlife. It was once a sleepy fishing village but from 1920s onwards it became the favourite holiday retreat for the Thai royal family - a respite from the humidity and busyness of Bangkok.

First, let's talk about the beaches. Hua Hin is famous for its long and wide sandy beaches, with clear waters and plenty of opportunities for water sports and beach activities. The most popular beaches in Hua Hin include

• The long expanse of sand and sea that is Hua Hin Beach, where you'll find most of the main resorts and hotels. There's accommodation to cater to most budgets from backpacker to high end luxury (Hyatt Regency, Sofitel and V Villas)

• Khao Takiab Beach - The distinguishing feature of this particular beach is the hill which gives the area its name. ‘Khao Takiab’ translates to ‘Chopstick Hill’, and
• Quieter Suan Son Pradiphat Beach characterised by its soft white sand surrounded by pine trees.

Whether you're looking to sunbathe, swim, lunch on local seafood, or try out some new water sports, you'll find plenty to keep you contented on Hua Hin's beaches. Definitely a good reason to spend a few days here.

In addition to the beaches, Hua Hin has great shopping options, and is also home to several cultural and historical attractions, such as the Hua Hin Railway Station, one of Thailand's oldest railway stations. In addition, it is one of the country's most beautiful train stations with unique architecture. 

Maruekhathaiyawan Palace is worth a visit, located between Hua Hin and neighbouring Cha-am. Built by King Vajiravudh (Rama VI) as a seaside summer retreat in 1923 the palace was built raised from the ground on pillars, and entirely made from teak wood.

Most Thai holiday towns have a ubiquitous night market and Hua Hin is no exception with at least 6. As any travel and food show host will tell you "the market is the beating heart of a location' so you must check out at least one of Hua Hin's. 

For those seeking adventure on land, Hua Hin also offers plenty of opportunities for outdoor activities, such as golfing, horse riding, and trekking. Whether you're an experienced golfer or a beginner, you'll find several world-class golf courses in Hua Hin, offering stunning views and challenging terrain. And if you prefer horse riding or trekking, there are several tours and excursions available that take you into the countryside and beyond. For water sports there's diving, snorkeling, kite boarding and kayaking to be enjoyed.

Finally, Hua Hin is also known for its vibrant nightlife, with a range of bars, clubs, and restaurants to suit all tastes and budgets. In particular, Hua Hin is a seafood lovers paradise.

Here are some popular night time spots in Hua Hin that are known for their food, drinks, and atmosphere:

Cicada Market: Very different in style from your usual Thai night market. An 'upmarket' night market! Local artisan shopping, food stalls, bars and live music. 

Tamarind Food Market is next to Cicada. Buzzing food court style market. Both Cicada and Tamarind are only open on the weekends catering to BKK residents coming down for the weekend.

Living Room Bistro and Wine Bar - set right next to the beach in a colonial style teak building. Upscale Thai specialising in seafood that thankfully doesn't dumb down the flavours for tourists. Prices reflect the beachside position. Western dishes also available. 

Soi 88 Food Court is everything I love about Thailand - Sanuk (great fun!). big stage for loud live bands, cheap drinks - think large Chang beers brought to your table - and many many food stalls to choose from. This is a popular local hangout. Our hotel concierge didn't think we'd want to go there. She was wrong! Authentic Thai experience. Ask your Tuk Tuk driver to take you there. 

Lung Ja Seafood - in the thick of the tourist night market. Pick your seafood from the displays at the front and choose how to have it cooked. Cheap, authentic and delicious food. Gotta love the Naked Body shape cocktail glasses!! Hua Hin Night Market, at 103/4-5 Dachanuchit Road

The seafood pier restaurants over the water are an iconic part of Hua Hin. Some have closed down due to Covid but Chaolay, the most famous is still going strong. Fresh seafood, cold beer and a table over the water - what more could you ask for? 15 Naresdamri Rd, Hua Hin
