The Bayon Temple at the Ancient City of Angkor is best known for the mysterious faces on its many towers. Bayon is normally on the must see list of Temples for any visitor to Angkor Wat. The portraits of sacred women, now called devata or apsaras depending on their style, surround the Bayon. No one knows exactly what the ancient Khmers called these women who are represented so prominently in their temples.
The Bayon primarily features two types of sacred Khmer women: celestial goddesses dancing on lotus flowers, generally located on pillars; and devata (as in this sculpture), who stand gracefully in niches surrounding the structure.
The Bayon Devata Sculptures have been crafted by Sculptor Phillipe, whose gallery is based near the Temples of Angkor, using a process of soaking and painting recycled paper strips. It comes with its own stand.
Phillipe has masterfully recreated these sacred women through his unique papier cache process. Sheer genius.
- Bayon Devata is 23x13 cm and sits on it's own stand
- Terracotta Effect or Stone Effect
All of Philippe's sculptures are entirely made by hand with recycled paper and vegetable fiber. They are then decorated with natural pigments and acrylic colors. Respecting the environment, the manufacturing process also makes it possible to recycle old newspapers. The result is impressive, the sculptures really appear as though they've been crafted in heavy stone, bronze, wood, terracotta ... Once you have the object d'art in your hand, you realize due to its lightness that it is only paper. The sculpture is both light and very solid. Remarkable.
Each Sculpture is a One Off Creation and should be treasured in its new home
